Thermostats

For the most part, homeowners have very little contact with their HVAC systems. Yes, you should be changing the air filter in your forced air heater or AC regularly, and you should be keeping your outdoor unit free of debris. In general, though, using your HVAC system is a fairly hands-off affair.

The major exception to this rule is, of course, the thermostat. Your thermostat is the means by which you communicate with your heater and air conditioner, and you have more direct interaction with it than with any other component in your HVAC system.
